What Does Damel Mean?

The word “Damel” comes from the Wolof kingdom of Cajor in what is now northwest Senegal, West Africa. It is a Wolof title meaning ruler (or king) & they were known to be strong & courageous leaders.

The most well known Damel is Lat Dior Diop (1842–1886) who died in battle during the final French drive to capture his territory, which was one of the strongest areas of resistance. Lat Dior is a Senegalese national hero.

Chef Oumar Diouf was born & raised in Senegal, in the same area as the historic kingdom of Cajor. The Damel restaurant was named to honor the birthpalace of Chef Oumar. The Damel aims to be a leader when it comes to quality cuisine at an affordable price.
